Tip of the week
Cooking:

Replace sweets and candy with a few dry fruits like almonds, etc. for after lunch munching. So much healthier.
Health:
Do bleeding gums mean you are not getting enough vitamin C? Not likely. While bleeding gums are a symptom of severe vitamin C deficiency, it is more commonly associated with poor oral hygiene or gum disease. Treating yourself with high doses of vitamin C will not cure gum disease. In addition, adequate levels of vitamin C can be obtained easily through food.

Cooking For Health: Grapes & Their Juices

grapes.jpg (26007 bytes)The news that drinking wine – particularly red wine – is associated with a lower risk of heart disease has received a big play. In fact, heart disease takes the least toll in countries where people drink it the most – France, in particular. Scientists suspect most of the benefits come from nonalcoholic flavonoids in red wine, particularly phenolics in grape skins. Some benefits of wine may also come from the alcohol, which raises "good" HDL cholesterol. Until more studies come in, scientists agree: don’t take up drinking to protect your heart. Since alcohol is linked to higher risks of some cancers, stick with purple grape juice or eat red and black grapes, which have more phenolics than green grapes.
How much do you need? Nutritionists suggest 2-4 servings of fruit a day. Drink wine in moderation.

No Diets: Weight Loss "Don'ts"
*Don’t go on starvation diets. They slow down your metabolism, which will make you fatter in the long run.
*Don’t buy anything that looks like gimmick. Fat burning pills, weight loss powders and fad diets may work in the beginning, but remember that you need to develop healthy eating habits for a lifetime. Save your money to spend on nutritious food and for the new clothes you’ll need in a few months!
*Get your percent body fat calculated and check it every other month. Forget about the scale – use a full-length mirror. Standing in front of it will tell you much more than the scale will. "A picture is worth a thousand words".
